OXFORD Stadium has confirmed a greyhound was injured after a trap failed ahead of a race.

The incident occurred at the Sandy Lane venue on April 4, with the dog – Newinn Flyer – understood to have suffered facial injuries as a result.

The greyhound’s head became stuck when its trap didn’t open at the beginning of the race.

An Oxford Stadium spokesperson told this newspaper: “We experienced an unforeseen failure to the power supply which enables the lids at the front of our traps to rise once the hare has passed.

“The cause of this issue has since been identified and our racing operation has resumed this week as normal without any complications.

“Newinn Flyer was immediately assessed by our on-site veterinary team and was entitled to funding from Oxford Stadium to assist with treatment costs.

“We’re pleased to report she is due to return to racing later this month following clearance from our veterinary team.

“We’re approaching a busy period to our greyhound racing schedule with Saturday evening racing back on our calendar and the semi-finals of the highly anticipated bet365 Hunt Cup scheduled on Friday which we look forward to hosting.”

Greyhound racing returned to Oxford Stadium in September after an almost decade-long absence.
