WITNEY Ladies suffered their first defeat in a month as they went down to a late penalty corner goal at Slough.

The Lambs had chances from Abi Flory and Lili Hargreaves, while Emily Dove, Chloe Williams and Alys Richards looked dangerous going forward.

Ellie Norton, Katie Gatt, Sam Saunders and Molly Larkin also marshalled a solid rearguard, which defended their own shooting circle very well.

However, they were undone with just a couple of minutes left, ironically when a Slough penalty corner wasn’t trapped cleanly, leading to chaos in the Witney circle and a free attacker to sweep the ball in.

A scrappy first quarter ended with Larkin blocking a Slough penalty corner and the second began with Flory not quite being able to deflect a ball fired into the circle by captain Gatt.

Richards and Williams combined well to get into the circle towards the end of the half, but neither could get a clean look at a shot once they got there.

The third quarter was easily the one with most action, with Hargreaves firing over the bar with a reverse stick shot from a long corner three minutes in.

Slough responded with a flurry of penalty corners and had a goal disallowed thanks to a foot from the attacking player.

Dove then made a storming run from inside her own half to the edge of her own half, and Flory shot wide with the Slough keeper off her line quickly to cover, before Slough won it at the death.
