GARY Sweeney extended his unbeaten record to six wins as he beat Lamah Griggs on points.

Bicester Boxing Club’s Sweeney connected a looping right hand with Griggs’ chin in a cagey first round at Birmingham Airport’s Holiday Inn.

Sweeney stepped up the intensity in the second round, while a menacing right hand drew blood from Griggs’ eyebrow in round three.

Both fighters look for the knockout in the fourth and final round, but it was Sweeney who finished on top.

The 28-year-old Irishman was awarded the victory by a score of 40-37.

He said: “It feels good to be competing on a regular basis again.

“I’m pleased with my performance but I know I have a lot more to show.

“I hope to be out again before the end of the year to set up a push for titles in the next 12 months.

“I’m pleased to be able to get the victory for myself and the coaching team at Bicester Boxing Club.

“We all work very hard in the gym so to have my hand raised is a victory for us all.”

Daza Usher, head coach at Bicester Boxing Club, added: “Gary boxed very well and deserved this victory.

“He has made huge improvements since his last contest and he’ll continue to progress.

“He’ll now take a few days off before getting back in the gym to prepare for his next fight.”
