The star of the Oxford-set television series Endeavour made a surprise return to the city this month.

Shaun Evans played Endeavour Morse over nine seasons of the ITV crime drama from its first episode in 2012 to its climax in 2023.

The actor was often seen filming in Oxford with fans spotting him at locations such as Radcliffe Camera and Christ Church College.

Fans were delighted though to see the actor back in the city earlier this month for a surprise appearance.

The 44-year-old star gave a reading of the Passion of Christ, according to Mark at Exeter College Chapel on Sunday, March 3.

Mr Evans stopped for photographs with fans afterwards including  Joanne, whose surname has not been disclosed, who travelled from London to meet her hero.

“I loved Endeavour and wanted the chance to see Shaun, especially in Oxford,” she said.

“He was lovely and spent a lot of time with fans after the service, talking to everyone, posing for photos.

“He really did have time for everyone.”

Endeavour is still clearly important to Mr Evans one year on from the show’s finale as he reacted warmly when Joanne mentioned the show.

“I didn’t speak for long because I was nervous but I said I was a big Endeavour fan and shook his hand and told him it was so great to meet him,” she said.

“He gave me a massive smile when I mentioned Endeavour. I was a little star-struck.

“We posed for the picture and then he asked me if I’d come far, and then wished me a safe journey home.”
