A poster advertising the Oxford University Ski Club’s annual trip to Klosters in 1934 will be sold at auction alongside more than 80 other rare art deco posters offering a glimpse into the Swiss ski resorts of the past.
The most expensive posters are estimated to fetch up to £20,000 each.
The rare British poster by James Riddell, also known for being a columnist, cartoonist, and competitive skier, is expected to fetch a sum of between £500 and £700.
Mr Riddell's earned his place in skiing history after placing eighth in the first-ever international downhill skiing competition.
The Ski Sale at Lyon and Turnbull will feature many posters which were commissioned shortly after the establishment of the resorts.
Prominent among these are art deco lithographic posters presenting views of St Moritz, Chamonix and Val d’Isere, designed to attract high-end tourists to the then newly constructed ski havens.
Swiss artist Alex Walter Diggelmann was one of the creative minds behind these captivating works.
His 1938 print showing a lively party on a ski lift in Gstaad, is expected to be among the top lots of the auction.
The poster, capturing a then novel sight in Gstaad after ski lifts were introduced around 1934, may be sold for between £15,000 and £20,000.
Alongside Mr Diggelmann, French artist Roger Broders contributed significantly to the collection.
He created six posters depicting the Alpine slopes, with many brought to life in wake of the first ever Winter Olympics in Chamonix in 1924.
His 1929 piece 'Winter Sports in the French Alps', which illustrates athletes debarking a train at the Col de Voza on Mont Blanc, is expected to go for between £6,000 and £8,000 at auction.
The auction is not simply aimed at deep-pocketed collectors.
It provides an array of affordable options from the post-war era.
The sale includes several posters from a series celebrating the beauty of the Swiss winter, photographed by Giegel around 1960.
An image of sun seeking skiers lounging on deckchairs at Villars-sur-Ollo is guided at a more modest £300-500.
Former Christie’s specialists Nicolette Tomkinson and Sophie Churcher, who have been responsible for the curation of the 81 original posters, said: “The Ski Sale presents collectors with colourful, decorative and striking vintage poster designs, perfect for winter sports lovers looking to decorate their home, office or chalet.
"There is a poster for every budget with estimates ranging from £300 up to £20,000."
The auction is due to take place on January 11.
