A GP practice rated ‘inadequate’ in a previous inspection has been found in continued breach of the regulations by a watchdog.

Newbury Street Surgery in Wantage was branded ‘requires improvement’- the second lowest rating possible- by the Care Quality Commission in a report made public last month.

The Care Quality Commission is the independent regulator of health and social care in England.

The inspection was a follow up to an inspection in September when the GP practice was rated ‘inadequate’ and placed in special measures.

Inspectors at the most recent visit raised concerns that the system for dealing with ‘significant events’ was not always effective.

The provider also did not have a workable system in place to ensure that all staff were up to date with vaccinations, the report said.

This was a breach of the regulations in the Health and Social Care Act 2008.

But the Care Quality Commission did acknowledge that the practice had made improvements since the inspection last year and that patients were cared for in a way that kept them safe and protected from avoidable harm.

There was also an 'improved system to seek feedback from patients and staff'.

The CQC recommended that the GP surgery should continue to monitor and improve the update of cervical screening to meet the national target of 80 per cent and to establish an effective system of recoding, reviewing and responding to complaints and significant events.

Newbury Street Surgery were contacted for comment. 

A spokesperson from the Buckinghamshire Oxfordshire and Berkshire West Integrated Care Board (BOB ICB) said: "The dedicated Newbury Street Practice team, supported by the BOB ICB, has made significant progress as reflected by the CQC.

"The hard work of staff has been recognised and the surgery is no longer rated 'inadequate'.

"The most recent inspection has identified a number of areas where significant improvements have been achieved, especially around patients getting the safe and effective care they need, introduction of a better appointments system and staff helping patients to live more healthily.

"Work is ongoing to ensure continued improvements.

"An action plan has been developed with the aim of finding effective and sustainable solutions to the concerns highlighted by the CQC, ensuring patients receive the best possible GP services into the future.”
