A luxury care home in Oxford has been given a new improved rating by the care regulator, after it was previously rated “requiring improvement”.
Cumnor Hill House, a care home with 75 ensuite bedrooms, was awarded a new rating of ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission since its last inspection in June 2022.
The care home’s rating before the pandemic in 2019 was 'outstanding' but the home was temporarily given a rating of 'requires improvement' after concerns about staffing, recruitment and medicines management were highlighted to the regulator.

However, the new rating of ‘Good’ has come after the home’s management team, led by general manager Sherrie Hume, introduced new policies and procedures which have ensured a consistency of care within the home.
The home is owned by the Berkley Care Group and its chief executive Andrew Winstanley said the latest ‘Good’ rating provided a “solid foundation” from which to “aim for an ‘Outstanding’ rating at the next inspection”.

He added: “This rating is a testament to the hard work of our compassionate staff, led by general manager Ms Hume.
“Our team at Cumnor Hill House has put in tremendous effort to ensure that every resident is treated with kindness, compassion and respect.
“We firmly believe that our residents deserve nothing but the best care, which is why we have invested in creating a comfortable environment with adaptive facilities on each floor, a hairdressing salon, a cinema room, and a wellness spa, among other amenities, to promote their wellbeing.”
New changes in the home include each floor being designated for a specific care need such as dementia, general nursing or residential care.

To address the Care Quality Commission’s previous concerns about the recruitment of staff, the management team has provided staff with “above average levels of pay, a cost of living support fund and well structured induction process, alongside ongoing staff training”.
The regulator’s report on the home noted that residents were given home-cooked food which was freshly prepared by the catering team and it was said that the home’s rooms were decorated to a ‘high standard’.

Other facilties available to residents at the home include a high-end bar, al fresco dining spaces, a large screen cinema, spa facilities and a luxury car service.
The gym and spa facilities on site mean tailored therapy is also available to residents to suit their individual needs.
The wider community and care professionals have been encouraged to visit the home’s community café on June 6 and this will be open on the first Tuesday of every month.
