2008 was a very different time.

The world was in the middle of a financial crisis, men were obsessed with those block coloured V-neck t-shirts from Topman and the first iPhone had just hit the shelves.

Before the era of Tinder and social media, singletons also used to actually meet in person? Can’t relate.

According to one online archive from 2008, the queue for Purple Turtle, Christ Church Meadow and Gloucester Green were some of the best ‘hook up’ spots in Oxford at the time.

The Knowhere Guide, a crowd-sourced guide to towns across the UK, has not been updated for years and now sits on the web as an archive of sorts.

In the later half of noughties, the guide provided insider-information from locals about everything from music venues to skateboarding spots and cheap food joints.

One section lists all the best ‘hook up’ spots in the city.

What were the best ‘hook up’ spots in 2008?

One local wrote: “In the queue for the Purple Turtle--this counts because the majority of the time you don't get in and end up going back to college and drinking in someone's room.”

Another user said Carfax because there are ‘benches to sit on’ and ‘phone boxes to phone the person who's stood you up’.

A third local said McDonalds in Cornmarket, they said: “Practically everyone who meets someone in Oxford, meets them outside McDonalds like it has a big magnetic pull or something.”

Many of the university’s parks had honourable mentions too.

Users said the parks were ‘pretty little spots’ and ‘beautiful in summer’.

Another added: “Christ Church Meadows is the best place for an after work beer on a summers evening.”
