A NEW record store has opened in the city centre after a eight-year hiatus.

Fopp, which closed down eight years ago, re-opened earlier this morning fully stocked with vinyls, CDs, TV box sets and videogames.

It is the first record store in the city centre since HMV closed in June 2014.

Customers began filing in to the Gloucester Green shop at the clock struck 9.

Former DJ Peter Conway was one of the first through the doors and planned to add to his extensive music collection.

He said: "It was sad when HMV closed down and a lot of people were very upset by it.

"Some have been using Amazon since but it's not the same as going into a shop and browsing physical copies.

"I already have a huge music collection at home but I'm sure I'll find something here to add to it."

He added: "It's great to have something like this back in the city centre - it's a great boost for the industry."

Truck Store in Cowley Road is the only other record store within the city with enthusiasts having to go further afield to add to their collection since the closure of HMV.

Fopp's manager James Eveleigh hoped his shop's opening would bring more people into the city centre.

He said: "It's great to be back in Oxford - we have had a great response on social media to the opening and people are happy to have a record store back in the city centre.

"It will definitely bring more people to the area - Oxford has plenty of clothes shops, plenty of restaurants and plenty of cafes that all offer the same thing.

"We now have a record store here and we are excited to welcome people to it."
